Sustainable Wedding Dress Fabrics

Sustainability practices can be a little ambiguous, and each individual will most likely have different ideas and beliefs on how to achieve that, and also be open to new and alternative stances. I’ve written a more detailed page on my current thoughts here, but otherwise, below are some practical options for creating a sustainable wedding dress.

Re-wearing your Grandmothers Wedding Dress

For Brides who love their mothers, or their grandmothers wedding dress, but it’s not quite the style they imagined for themselves. These brides decided to create a brand new wedding dress designs using the fabric from their mother’s wedding dresses, from screen printed silks to delicate lace, minimising the amount of new materials required to make these wedding dresses.

Peace Silk/Ahimsa Silk

(Trigger Warning) Peace silks are cruelty-free silk and refers to any type of silk that is produced without harming or killing the silk worms. This is in contrast to conventional silk, whereby cocoons are steamed, boiled, or dried in the sun, killing the silk larvae inside. Many Vegan Brides ask for Peace Silks in particular as they are a natural fibre, unlike many synthetic fibres which cause indirect harm to animals, and direct harm to the environment.

Vintage Lace

It’s a sad fact that vintage and antique lace will some day perish, so why no seize the opportunity to admire it’s beauty while you can, rather than keeping in a drawer, unseen.
These brides made use of family heirloom lace, embroidered and appliqued to form their wedding dresses.
